believing...

Mark 9:23-24
And Jesus said to him, "'If you can! All things are possible for one who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!"
What does it mean to really believe?

Jesus' statement seems so unreal... almost unbelievable (ironically). It is a tension that seems to follow all those who want to pursue a life chasing hard after Christ. Is it REALLY true - are ALL things possible for those who believe? In Christ? In what He can do?

Too often I find myself in the shoes of the father of the child... desperate, I want to believe that Jesus can do all that He has said He can do... No, I DO believe that Jesus can do all that He has said... Help me Lord to believe!

It feels like a battle between what we see all around us and what we know to be true about our God... because, after all, sick children die everyday around this cruel globe to God believing parents BUT we know God is good, in control and searches the world for hearts fully committed to Him... Help me believe Lord!

It becomes even more complicated when we find ourselves dealing with the divine will of God vs. our small version of the story. Our perspectives are so small compared to Gods... I do believe Lord, help me!

This man's response is so honest and yet filled with desperate intent. It is perhaps one of the shortest most powerful prayers in the whole Bible. It allows for a tension that is foreign to our ears... a sort of both-and. The result is a cry from a despairing father on behalf of his broken child to an all powerful Savior. Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!
